Stop the redirection of the Light Rail to Westgate
· In 2001, the citizens of Glendale voted on a prop(402) to add a 1/2 cent sales tax to connect the light rail from Phoenix to downtown Glendale
· Currently the Mayor and city officials are trying to reroute the light rail to run along the I-10 and loop 101 to Westgate (an area they proclaim “to be the new city center”) with a possible added cost to Glendale citizens
· Running the light rail to Westgate will devastate our downtown and Central Glendale neighborhoods, schools and business districts. Also, the new proposed route will not serve many Glendale residents; it would run mostly through Phoenix!
· Serving the Westgate area completely ignores the “Centerline Project”, a city initiative to revitalize the downtown corridor; which is funded by the tax payers.
· The light rail will increase property values to the downtown / central Glendale Area! Previously proven in Phoenix and other metropolises throughout the country.
· The light rail will bring businesses and customers to downtown/ central Glendale. This is already happening in Phoenix along the light rail passageway.
· The light rail will provide a better mode of transportation. In the summer of 2008 gas prices climbed up to over $4.00 a gallon, although the prices recently fell; they are quickly rising again. With demand increasing and supplies diminishing, the price of gas will continue to rise. The future of our society depends on new forms of travel!
· The light rail will make available transportation to those who currently rely on the inadequate bus systems, giving many the opportunities to find jobs in other parts of the metro; which would have been previously unobtainable. Every day citizens need the light rail – not sport enthusiasts!
